Resident Engineer on the British section
has resigned his appointment, and that the
Consulting Engineers have recommended that he
should be replaced by an officer who can
combine the duties of Chief Resident Engineer
with that of adviser to the Hongkong Government
on questions of traffic and of the projected
working agreement.

I am to enclose an extract from a
letter from the Consulting Engineers on the
question from which it will be seen that
r E.S.Lindsey of the South Indian Railway
has been sounded as to his willingness to
undertake the past, and that he would be
willing to do so for a salary of a:2,000

if Viscount Marley see no accordingly to ask that inquiry may be made by
telegraph of the Government of India as to
whether Mr Lindsey is likely to fulfil Sir
F.Lugard's requirements and,
if so,
whether
they would be good enough to spare his ser-
vices for a period of two years from
September next at a salary of £2,000 per
annum and to undertake to give favourable
consideration
o a further extension of the
period of his engagement under the Hongkong
Government, if that should be considered
desirable.
